An app is a stand-alone piece of software usually aimed at performing a single well defined function. Mostly it refers to software used on mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets.

Some suggest its name derives from Apple – whose appstore is an important source of apps, or from application which has long been used to describe a piece of functional software. Text messaging apps are most often used to integrate SMS functionality into 3rd party systems.

It seems that reports of the death of SMS have been greatly exaggerated.
