Hospitals, dentists, even veterinary surgeries, can waste a lot of time and money through “no shows”. When a client fails to turn up for an appointment not only is the time wasted but expensive resources stand idle. Increasingly health professionals are sending appointment reminders by text message to combat this wastage. This is greatly reducing the “no shows” to everyone’s benefit.

There are many other innovative uses. Smokers are helped by receiving tips and advice on giving up smoking. Others receive reminders to take their medication. The ease of automating SMS messaging plus the almost universal availability of mobile phones means more and more uses will be found over the coming years.

No-shows are a serious issue in dental offices. Some surveys estimate they account for as much as 10% of appointments, resulting in thousands of pounds lost each year.
